The Senate Committee on Economic Development and Tourism is poised to consider a measure to regulate and tax sports betting, with the Georgia Lottery Commission overseeing it.
Proceeds from Senate Bill 386 would contribute to student financial aid programs, including the HOPE college scholarship.
“SB 386 is a vital piece of legislation that I am proud to have authored. By bringing an activity that countless Georgians already participate in – whether online, with friends, or with booking agents – under the regulation and direction of the Georgia Lottery Corporation, we can generate additional dollars to benefit future generations of Georgians,” Sen. Clint Dixon, R-Gwinnett, said in a statement. “SB 386 would allocate proceeds towards the HOPE college scholarship, pre-kindergarten programs, and need-based student aid.”
State Sen. Minority Leader Gloria Butler, D-Stone Mountain, Sen. Bo Hatchett, R-Cornelia, and Lt. Gov. Burt Jones, a Republican, have voiced support for the measure.
