GBI investigates officer-involved shooting in Brookhaven

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating an officer-involved shooting in Brookhaven, Georgia, the 85th officer-involved shooting police in the state have asked the GBI to investigate this year.

The Dunwoody Police Department asked the GBI to conduct an independent investigation on November 1, 2023. One man was shot and is in stable condition. No officers were injured in this incident.

The preliminary information indicates that at about 7 a.m., Dunwoody Police Department officers responded to a gas station on Ashford-Dunwoody Road near Perimeter Mall about a stolen vehicle. As officers attempted to box in the stolen car in the parking lot of the gas station, the driver of the car drove away from the location, hitting the officers’ patrol cars. Officers pursued the car south into Brookhaven.

The stolen car became disabled during the pursuit, and the driver, a man, ran away from the officers. While he was running away, he fired a handgun, and officers returned fire, hitting him several times.

Authorities took the man to a local hospital for treatment.

The GBI will conduct an independent investigation. Once complete, authorities will give the case to the DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office for review.
