Man shot by police in Smyrna dies

A 26-year-old man shot by police in Smyrna, Georgia, died this morning.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation identified him as Marthely Theodore, age 26, of Smyrna.

Cobb County Police communications center began receiving 911 calls of a man pointing a gun at passing cars near Benson Poole Road. Cobb County Police asked Smyrna police to help locate the man.

Smyrna officers encountered the armed man at the intersection of Benson Poole Road and Smyrna Powder Springs Road. Officers repeatedly asked the man to drop his firearm and the man advanced towards officers, raising his firearm towards officers, who shot him.

He was taken to a local hospital.
