Views from Venice: A boat ride along the Canal Grande

VENICE, Italy — Venice is one of the most amazing places to see. And, one of the best ways to experience the city is on the Grand Canal.

The canal is the main transportation artery for this historic city, cutting an S-shaped path through the city. The waterway may follow the route of an ancient river, and today, the canal is a flurry of activity, from delivery boats to water taxis (known as vaporetti in Italian).

The city is built around the canal. Businesses and residences line the banks of the canal.

Traversing the city via the canal offers a nice view of the Rialto Bridge, the oldest bridge crossing the waterway. The bridge was builf from 1588 until 1591.
