The Amtrak train involved in yesterday’s deadly wreck in Philadelphia was traveling at more than 100 mph at the time of the crash, the NTSB said today.
Seven people were killed and dozens injured after the Washington-to-New York train derailed north of Philadelphia at about 9:30 p.m. yesterday. The engineer has apparently declined to speak with investigators, according to news reports.

Amtrak could improve its service and save money “if the availability of the conventional fleets were improved to the level of the Acela equipment,” the railroad’s inspector general told Congress recently.
Amtrak reported a 1.3 percent increase in riders last fiscal year. That includes a 3.7 percent increase in ridership on long-distance trains, the railroad said.
