ATLANTA — The famed Polaris restaurant and bar reopened in June 2014 following a decade absence.
The rotating restaurant, sits atop the 22-story Hyatt Regency Atlanta in downtown Atlanta, opened in 1967. Before a number of taller buildings were erected around the Hyatt, Polaris offered some of the best views in the city.
Designed by John Portman, Polaris is famous for its distinctive blue dome.
“In 1967, Downtown was in dire need of help. It was deteriorating fast,” Atlanta Magazine quoted former Atlanta Mayor Sam Massell as saying in May 2014.“John Portman changed all that. The vision he had was very dramatic. It was the focal point for taking out-of-town dignitaries, ambassadors, U.S. senators, and movie stars.”
