WDW’s Space Mountain to close for rehab

Would-be Walt Disney World guests beware. The resort is planning to close Space Mountain for much of 2009 to refurbish the ride.

A Walt Disney World spokeswoman told OrlandoSentinel.com the changes to the beloved coaster, which opened on Jan. 15, 1975, will be “modest.” The ride is expected to close April 19 and the rehab will last for months, though an exact finish date has not been announced.

“We’re retaining many of the classic elements that made Space Mountain a (rite) of passage at the Magic Kingdom that’s been enjoyed by generations,” WDW spokeswoman Andrea Finger said, according to OrlandoSentinel.com.

In addition to Space Mountain, the Tomorrowland Transit Authority, which passes through Space Mountain, will be closed for a refurbishment. The TTA opened July 1, 1975, as the WEDway PeopleMover.
