There is no road to Madagascar

I found myself in the midst of some unusual company — lemurs, you know, the primates that live in Madagascar.

To most people, a weekend is a chance to recover from the workweek. But for me, the weekend is a chance for an adventure.

I’m not the kind of person to limit my travel possibilities to a vacation week; an extended weekend is the perfect opportunity to take a trip. Usually, it’s by car so I can take time to explore stops along the way.

After, some quick research, I came to the realization Madagascar was not an option. You see, there aren’t a lot of roads to the island that lies off the coast of Africa in the Indian Ocean. So, I did the next best thing n I went to North Carolina.

And yes, I really did see some lemurs.

A few weeks ago, I met up with some friends in Keeneland in Lexington, Ky. We took in some horse racing and caught up on old times over drinks and dinner. During the course of our conversation, two of my friends invited me up to their abode for the weekend.

Never one to pass up the opportunity to travel, I jumped on the chance.

The weekend, as it turned out, was packed with dining experiences, lemur-gazing and sporting events. That’s not to mention, the dozens of picture-taking opportunities. It was non-stop excitement from the start, validating my affinity for the weekend getaway, something I’ve fine-tuned since I graduated from college.

Trips can range from the complicated to the simple, from the far to the close.

Countless times, I’ve left on a trip at the last minute, planning very little. Those at times are the best. Other times, like this past weekend, I’ve left it up to my friends, who have yet to disappoint me when it comes to planning a weekend.

While I didn’t quite make it to Madagascar to see the lemurs in their natural habitat a quick trip to the Duke University Primate Center was a great opportunity. Besides, I don’t have enough frequent flyer miles to buy a plane ticket to Madagascar — yet.
