Black Kahawa Coffee

Overview

Black Kahawa Coffee in Columbus, Ohio, grew out of founder Douglas Buckley’s years living and roasting coffee in Tanzania. A Columbus native, Buckley spent more than a decade in East Africa as part of a faith-based community involved in humanitarian work, while also developing a deep connection to the region’s coffee culture.

While in Tanzania, he co-founded a small roasting company that taught women to roast coffee by hand. Working without automated equipment, the women learned to rely on sight, sound, smell, touch and taste to develop their craft. Buckley spent nearly a decade teaching and refining his own roasting skills while building relationships with Tanzanian coffee growers and cooperatives.

Those experiences shaped the business he launched after returning to Columbus in 2019. Black Kahawa Coffee focuses on East African coffees and reflects Buckley’s long-standing ties to the people and places behind the beans.
