Overview

The Royal Albatross Centre is a wildlife attraction at Taiaroa Head on the Otago Peninsula near Dunedin, New Zealand. It provides access to the world’s only mainland breeding colony of northern royal albatross, which have wingspans of about 3 meters.

Guided tours lead visitors into the nature reserve to an enclosed observatory overlooking the colony. Depending on the season, visitors may see courtship, nesting, egg incubation, chicks being raised and adult albatross in flight. Double-glazed viewing windows allow observation with minimal disturbance to the birds.

The center also offers tours of nearby Fort Taiaroa, combining the area’s natural history with its military heritage.
