Pat Tillman Freedom Plaza

Overview

Pat Tillman gave up an NFL career to enlist in the United States Army Special Operations in May 2002 following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. He was killed in action on April 22, 2004.

Tillman was posthumously promoted from specialist to corporal. He also posthumously received the Silver Star and Purple Heart medals.

On Nov. 12, 2006, during an Arizona Cardinals game against the Dallas Cowboys, an 8-foot, 500-pound bronze sculpture depicting Tillman in mid-stride with long hair flowing, helmet in hand, and mouth open as if shouting, was unveiled against a curved black concrete wall and a circular reflecting pond.
