1996 Manchester Bombing Postbox

Overview

The 1996 Manchester Bombing Postbox is a pillar box on Corporation Street in central Manchester, England, that survived the Provisional Irish Republican Army bombing of June 15, 1996. Despite standing only yards from the explosion, the postbox remained largely undamaged while surrounding buildings suffered extensive destruction.

The postbox was removed during the city center’s reconstruction after the bombing. It was returned to its original location when Corporation Street reopened on Nov. 22, 1999.

A small brass plaque attached to the postbox commemorates its survival and subsequent return, and it has become a reminder of the bombing and Manchester’s reconstruction.
