Mamucium founded

Overview

Mamucium, also known as Mancunium, was a Roman fort established around AD 79 in what is now the Castlefield area of Manchester, England. The fort was constructed in the Roman province of Britain near two important Roman roads and was garrisoned by a cohort of auxiliary troops.

Civilian settlements developed outside the fort as the military presence attracted soldiers’ families, merchants and industries serving the garrison. These settlements, known as vici, helped establish the community from which Manchester later developed.
