BELFAST, Northern Ireland (Sightseers’ Delight) — A 44-year-old man has been charged after Belfast’s Big Fish sculpture was damaged early Sunday, police said.
The man faces charges of criminal damage and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place. He is scheduled to appear Monday at Belfast Magistrates’ Court.
Belfast Live reported that the damaged sculpture was the Big Fish on Donegall Quay, one of the city’s best-known public artworks. Police were called at about 12:30 a.m. after receiving a report that someone was damaging the sculpture. Ceramic tiles around its left eye were smashed.
The Big Fish, also known as the Salmon of Knowledge, is a 33-foot ceramic mosaic created by artist John Kindness and installed in 1999. Its tiles depict scenes and information connected to Belfast’s history.
Police said the Public Prosecution Service will review the charges, as is standard procedure. The man is due to appear at Belfast Magistrate’s Court on Monday, Sept. 21.
