Schmidt’s Sausage Haus Restaurant

Overview

Schmidt’s is a Columbus, Ohio, food company and restaurant business whose origins date to 1886, when German immigrant J. Fred Schmidt established the J. Fred Schmidt Meat Packing House in German Village.

The company became known for German-style meats and expanded into food concessions in 1914, when George L. Schmidt opened a stand at the Ohio State Fair. The Schmidt’s concession remains one of the fair’s longstanding food operations.

The family expanded into the restaurant business in July 1967, when J. Fred Schmidt’s grandson, George F. Schmidt, opened Schmidt’s Sausage Haus near the original meat packing plant in German Village. The restaurant incorporated meat recipes from the packing business and German dessert recipes used by its kitchen staff.

Schmidt’s subsequently expanded beyond its meat packing and restaurant origins into catering, banquets, retail sales, festival concessions and mobile food operations. The business remains under Schmidt family management, with fourth- and fifth-generation family members involved in its operations.
