Biography
Valentine Sevier was a pioneer settler and Revolutionary War officer associated with the early settlement of the Clarksville, Tennessee, area. Born in Virginia in 1747, he was the brother of John Sevier, who became the first governor of Tennessee.
Sevier purchased 640 acres near the Cumberland River and settled there with his family before Clarksville developed into an established community. In 1794, his family and a neighboring household were attacked by Native Americans, resulting in several deaths. Sevier Station, built in 1792, is a surviving remnant of the settlement and is considered Clarksville’s oldest standing structure.
Sevier died on February 23, 1800. He was buried on his property across the Red River at a site that later became Riverview Cemetery.
