Proposed legislation would create a bipartisan commission to address local and municipal issues across Ohio.
State Rep. Melanie Miller, R-Ashland, introduced House Bill 912 to create the 13-member State and Municipal Government Commission. The entity would foster collaboration between state legislators and local leaders to examine and address challenges affecting municipalities across the Buckeye State.
“Ohio’s municipalities face unique challenges that deserve thoughtful collaboration between state and local leaders,” Miller said in a release. “This commission creates a dedicated forum for bipartisan discussion and problem-solving so communities of every size can have a stronger voice in shaping policies that impact their residents, infrastructure, and economic growth.”
Members would include four appointed by the governor, including two mayors or their designees from municipalities with at least 60,000 residents. The Senate president, the speaker of the House, the Senate minority leader, and the House minority leader would also appoint members.
As proposed, members would serve two-year terms and meet at least twice per year. The commission will submit a biennial report by Jan. 29 of each odd-numbered year, detailing recommendations for lawmakers and summarizing legislation passed concerning home rule and municipal authority.
