Necklace swipe goes nowhere: Cops nab woman after alleged $74,500 grab in Auckland

AUCKLAND, New Zealand — A 26-year-old woman allegedly tried to walk off with a $74,500 necklace in Auckland’s CBD on Wednesday afternoon. She didn’t get far.

Police said they were called to a business on Galway Street just before 5 p.m. after the woman entered the store allegedly carrying a metal pole, grabbed a necklace from a display and then threatened employees when they confronted her as she tried to leave.

When officers arrived, police said the woman allegedly used the pole to smash a display cabinet valued at about $20,000. She was taken into custody without further incident, and the necklace was recovered and returned to the store, police said.

Police credited store employees with moving quickly enough to keep the situation from getting worse.

The woman is scheduled to appear in the Auckland District Court on March 5. She faces charges including demands to steal, possession of an offensive weapon, threatening to do grievous bodily harm, shoplifting over $1,000 and intentional damage.

Police did not identify the store, though there is a Tiffany & Co. on Galway Street.
