Capitol Police arrest Georgia man running toward U.S. Capitol with loaded shotgun

United States Capitol Police officers arrested a Smyrna, Georgia, man who they said ran toward the U.S. Capitol with a loaded shotgun.

The arrest happened shortly after noon Tuesday, Feb. 17, on the Lower West Terrace, according to a Capitol Police release. Police said the suspect also had multiple rounds of ammunition and a tactical-style vest.

Officers also located the suspect’s SUV parked in front of the U.S. Botanic Garden on Maryland Avenue SW, police said. A gas mask and helmet were visible inside the vehicle, the agency said.

No one was hurt, Capitol Police said.

Police identified the suspect as 18-year-old Carter Camacho of Smyrna. He was arrested on charges of unlawful activities, carrying a rifle without a license, and possession of an unregistered firearm and unregistered ammunition, authorities said.

Capitol Police said their Threat Assessment Section is investigating to determine the suspect’s motive and that he was not previously on file with the agency.
