AUCKLAND, New Zealand — There’s something disappointing about arriving in and departing from a country.
Departing makes sense. Arriving is disappointing in that the first view is of the airport. It’s impersonal and unpleasant. It’s not normally a great first impression of a country.
Leaving somewhere after an incredible trip is altogether different. It’s moved too quickly. But the memories will stay forever. There were funny moments, quirky moments and others that were downright poignant.
There were new insights gained, references to obscure local television shows and absolute amazement at the beauty a place like New Zealand offers.
Auckland, in particular, has become something of an old friend. Walking through the city is like catching up with someone you haven’t spoken with in a couple of years. You talk about what’s new, relive the good old days and talk about what’s next.
I remember the first time I walked the city streets. I knew from the start the place was special. I know it even more now. I hate to leave, but the good news is that the next trip is that much closer.
