Waffle House is adding a 50-cent per egg surcharge amid an avian flu outbreak nationwide that is blamed for rising egg prices.
“While we hope these price fluctuations will be short-lived we cannot predict how long this shortage will last,” ABC News quoted the company as saying in a Monday statement. “We are continuously monitoring egg prices and will adjust or remove the surcharge as market conditions allow.”
According to some estimates, egg price have increased by 40% in some locations. While unpopular with consumers, restaurants have little choice but to pass the increase on to consumers.
“When shortages like this happen, operators work closely with their food suppliers to determine how it will impact them,” CNN quoted Sean Kennedy, executive vice president of public affairs at the National Restaurant Association, as saying. “There are several options operators consider, from changing their menus to increasing their prices.”
Georgia Democrats wasted no time blaming the iconic Georgia-based fast-food chain’s decision on President Donald Trump.
“Waffle House raising prices on eggs is smothered and covered in irony considering Trump campaigned on lowering these costs on Day 1,” Democratic Party of Georgia spokesperson Dave Hoffman said in a release. “And with Governor Brian Kemp, for his part, reading the Waffle House menu aloud during his recent State of the State address, Republicans are making clear their policies are responsible for increasing our costs regardless of their deflections and denials otherwise.”
