President Donald Trump today signed S. 5, the “Laken Riley Act,” into law.
The measure, named for a 22-year-old Georgia nursing student killed in the liberal enclave of Athens, Georgia, requires the secretary of Homeland Security to take into custody aliens who have been charged in the United States with theft and for other purposes. It was the first legislation Trump signed during his second presidential term.
“Laken was a remarkable young lady who tragically lost her life, and while we can never bring her back, this Act will ensure that her legacy lives on,” Georgia Lt. Governor Burt Jones, a Republican, said in a statement. “This law will ensure that future lives will be saved and illegal immigrants who commit crimes are held accountable to the fullest extent of the law. The fundamental freedoms our citizens enjoy should not be extended to those who come here illegally and commit crimes. President Trump has made it clear we will hold these criminals accountable, and he has my full and unequivocal support.”
During the 2024 legislative session, Georgia lawmakers passed House Bill 1105, the Georgia Criminal Alien Track and Report Act of 2024. The measure, which Republican Gov. Brian Kemp signed, requires Georgia law enforcement officials to work in conjunction with federal immigration authorities and to send, receive and maintain information relating to the immigration status of any individual as reasonably needed for public safety purposes.
“The passage of HB 1105 reinforced our commitment here in Georgia to stand firmly against all forms of illegal immigration,” added Speaker Burns. “This legislation laid the groundwork for the success of President Trump’s current deportation initiatives across the state, and we’re looking forward to continue working alongside the President to make America–and Georgia–safe again.”
