ATLANTA — Atlanta city officials say a successful and safe weekend that included the college football national championship is a testament to their collaboration, planning and execution.
The city hosted more than 100,000 visitors for Martin Luther King Jr. celebrations and the College Football Playoff, which saw The Ohio State University defeat Notre Dame in a thriller, delivering the Buckeyes a seventh national championship.
Officials reported no significant increase in 911 or 311 calls, which they argue demonstrates their ability to execute large-scale events safely, efficiently and collaboratively.
“This weekend’s success is a testament to the power of collaboration,” the city said in a news release. “Real-time situational updates and emergency response coordination ensured smooth operations resulting in a safe, organized and memorable weekend for all.”
The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority executed shuttle operations, with more than 12,000 riders, to bring fans to Mercedes Benz. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport screened 408,000 passengers, accommodated 13 additional flights for CFP fans and hosted a projected 1.5 million passengers while preparing for a winter storm.
