Georgia AG taps engineering firm for gangway collapse probe

The Georgia attorney general has retained an engineering firm to conduct an independent investigation into the cause of the collapse of a gangway at the Marsh Landing Dock on Sapelo Island.

According to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates specializes in investigating, testing, and designing repairs for buildings, bridges, and other structures. According to the WJE website, they “…have participated in the engineering or architectural investigation of many of the United States’ most significant major failures and natural disasters and has assisted in many investigations globally.”

Seven people were killed and 20 more injured on Oct. 19 when the gangway at the Marsh Landing Dock on Sapelo Island collapsed.
