50 killed in mass Las Vegas shooting

At least 50 people were killed after a gunman opened fire during a country music festival along the Las Vegas strip last night, according to media reports.

More than 200 others were wounded in what has been described as the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history.

The gunman, now identified as 64-year-old Stephen Paddock of Mesquite, Nev., was perched on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay casino. That position was across the street from an outdoor venue hosting the Route 91 festival.

“We don’t know what his belief system was at this time,” Voice of America quoted Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Sheriff Joseph Lombardo as saying.

Paddock was killed, though Fox News reported it is unclear whether authorities shot him or if he committed suicide.
