Huntingdon picked to win USA South conference

Huntingdon was selected in a pre-season coaches poll to win the USA South conference.

The Hawks picked up six of eight first place votes. Maryville and Methodist also received first place votes.

Huntingdon finished the 2014 season with a 7-3 record overall and a 6-2 record in the USA South. That landed the Hawks in second place behind Christopher Newport (8-4, 7-1); the Captains have since moved to the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC).

“We have the same two goals this year that we’ve had the past two years, to win the conference and win the sportsmanship award. That’s not going to change,” Huntingdon coach Mike Turk said in a news release. “Someone has to be voted as the preseason favorite. What will determine the conference champion will be about what we can accomplish between now and Thanksgiving.”

Here is the complete poll:

  • Huntingdon (48)
  • Maryville (42)
  • Methodist (39)
  • LaGrange (27)
  • N.C. Wesleyan (25)
  • Averett (17)
  • Ferrum (15)
  • Greensboro (11)

The 2015 USA South football season kicks off Sept. 4. Both Averett and N.C. Wesleyan take on non-conference teams that day.

The remaining USA South members start their 2015 campaigns against non-conference opponents the next day.
