First PEOPLExpress, now Eastern Air Lines.
A company wants to revive the iconic airline brand and start flying as a charter carrier as soon as March, The Miami Herald reported. The new airline is not affiliated with the airline that operated until 1991, but the new company did acquire the intellectual property of the former carrier, including its famous logo.
The airline in January filed for a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity with the U.S. Department of Transportation. Eastern is using Miami International Airport as its main base of operations.
In May 2014, the airline said it ordered 20 Next Generation Boeing 737-800 aircraft. The airline also had purchase rights for an additional 10 737-800 aircraft.
PEOPLExpress launched last year as a reboot of a 1980s airline with the same name, but was not a corporate successor. The airline stopped flying in September, but according to its Facebook page indents to resume flights this year.
