Georgia State is moving junior Marcus Carrey from corner back to running back in the wake of injuries.
The Iowa Western Community College transfer originally signed to play running back with Kentucky. Caffey started all four games at cornerback for Georgia State (1-3) this year, and made 10 tackles and three pass breakups for the Panthers.
The Panthers lost sophomore running backs Kyler Neal and Jonathan Jean-Bart to season-ending knee injuries in a 45-14 loss at Washington. Caffey is expected to split time with senior Duvall Smith.
“Marcus Caffey has the size and speed you want, and he is one of the best athletes on our football team,” head coach Trent Miles said. “He will see significant time at running back.”
With Caffey’s transition to offense, true freshmen Chandon Sullivan and Antreal Allen will see more action in the secondary. The Panthers travel to UL Lafayette for a Saturday evening Sun Belt Conference showdown at Cajun Field.
“They’ve lost to Ole Miss who is in the top ten in the nation. They’ve lost to Boise State at Boise and they lost to a very good Louisiana Tech team,” Miles said. “They are the defending conference champion that has been to three straight bowl games. And they’re playing at home in front of a great crowd that they get great support from. They’re a very talented football team and they’re well coached so we will have to play well in order to be with them in the fourth quarter. This is a big, strong, physical football team.”
