ROME, Ga. — Heath Haden threw for 255 yards and three touchdowns as Centre College defeated Berry College by a 48-6 margin.
Centre College (4-1) fell behind 6-0 early, but used an 81-yard kickoff return by Alex Mattingly to set up an 18-yard touchdown pass from Heath Haden to Brandon Kamp to put the Colonels on top. They never looked back, holding Berry (1-5) to 57 rushing yards and 160 passing yards.
“We played well defensively,” The (Danville, Ky.) Advocate Messenger quoted Centre Coach Andy Frye as saying after the game. “We played hard up front. They couldn’t get a running game going, and their passing game was kind of sporadic.”
In Springfield, Ohio, Reed Florence three for 351 yards and four touchdowns as Wittenberg (4-1) defeated Denison University (4-2), 38-20. Brandon Sklenar completed 27 of 38 passes for 240 yards and a touchdown to lead Denison, but also threw a pair of interceptions.
Denison jumped to a 3-0 lead, but Wittenberg turned the tide, taking a 24-17 lead into halftime. The Big Red closed the gap to 24-20 in the third quarter, but could not manage to put any more points on the board.
“We had to fight through frustration,” the Springfield (Ohio) News-Sun quoted Wittenberg coach Joe Finchamas saying. “We played hard. We just made a lot of critical mistakes, especially in the first half. You keep putting yourself in third-and-bad, it’s hard.”
In Crawfordsville, Ind., undefeated Wabash College (5-0) continued their winning ways in a 38-13 win over Ohio Wesleyan University (3-2).
Wabash jumped to a 7-0 lead following a Houston Hodges 56-yard punt return for a touchdown with 12:57 remaining in the first quarter and headed into halftime with a 28-7 lead. Anthony Stella led Wabash’s offense, rushing for 189 yards and two touchdowns.
In Greencastle, Ind., Matt Hunt threw for 321 yards and three touchdowns as DePauw University (1-4) cruised past Oberlin College (1-4) by a 45-11 margin.
At halftime, the school dedicated the new AstroTurf field at Blackstock Stadium as Nick Mourouzis Field in honor of the team’s former coach. “Coach Nick,” as he’s known, led the Tigers for 23 years (1981-2003) and earned a 133-82-4 record during his tenure.
In San Antonio, Texas., Millsaps College (5-0) squeaked past Trinity (3-3) by a 27-24 margin. Mike Barthelemy ran for 163 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Millsaps ground attack.
In Sewanee, Tenn., Rhodes College (5-1) cruised past Sewanee: The University of the South (2-4), 50-23. Blake Box led the Rhodes offense, throwing for 239 yards and tossing four touchdowns.
In Conway, Ark., Eric Daginella scored three touchdowns on 220 yards passing and 83 rushing yards to lead Washington University (4-2) to a 45-41 win over Hendrix College (2-3).
In LaGrange, Ga., Evan Pittenger threw for 255 yards and two touchdowns, while also running for 108 yards and a touchdown to lead Maryville College (5-1) to a 47-35 victory over LaGrange College (2-3). Graham Craig threw for 395 yards and four touchdowns to lead LaGrange’s offense.
In Union, N.J., The College of New Jersey (3-2) survived a defensive struggle with Kean (1-4) by a 7-0 margin. Victor Scalici put the Lions on the board with a 15-yard touchdown with 7:44 remaining in the first quarter for the game’s only points.
