THOMASVILLE, N.C. – The 78-year history of Old Dominion Freight Line is chronicled in a new book, “Helping the World Keep Promises.”
With a foreword by Steve Forbes, chairman of Forbes Media, author Jeff Rodengen shares the inspirational story of Earl and Lillian Congdon, Old Dominion’s founders, who in 1934 pooled their life savings to start the company.
The book is filled with stories and personal anecdotes from long-standing employees, executives and customers.
What began as a company with a single truck hauling eggs between Richmond and Norfolk, Virginia, is today a global publicly traded company with more than 14,000 employees that does $2 billion in annual revenue and has 220 domestic service centers and global operations delivering goods to more than 48,000 locations.
“Our company has prospered for more than 78 years and has grown into the nation’s premier LTL transportation provider,” David Congdon, president and CEO of Old Dominion and the grandson of Earl and Lillian Congdon, said in a news release. “Our growth was certainly not easy, and it would have not been possible without the dedication and hard work of the entire Old Dominion family throughout the years.”
