The Fourth of July travel period is the riskiest holiday travel period of the year for red-light running in many states.
That’s according to research from the National Coalition for Safer Roads (NCSR).
Nationally, the Fourth of July is the second most dangerous holiday behind Memorial Day for red-light running violations. It is the most dangerous holiday for such violations in California, Florida, Maryland and Texas
“Drivers should be extra cautious on the roads during all highly trafficked holiday travel periods,” David Kelly, president and executive director of NCSR, said in a news release. “Statistics about red-light running and overall intersection safety make this fact more tangible and heighten awareness about the risks that dangerous drivers create for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.”
Kelly is a former acting administrator of NHTSA.
According to NCSR:
- California: 42.6 percent more red-light violations occur during the Fourth of July travel period than the lowest ranked holiday travel period in the state (Super Bowl)
- Florida: 39 percent more red-light violations occur during the 4th of July travel period than the lowest ranked holiday travel period in the state (Christmas)
- Maryland: 38 percent more red-light violations occur during the 4th of July travel period than the lowest ranked holiday travel period in the state (Super Bowl)
- Texas: 37.8 percent more red-light violations occur during the 4th of July travel period than the lowest ranked holiday travel period in the state (Super Bowl)
