The parent company of regional airlines that fly on behalf of Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines and other carriers has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

AirTran Airways said it is cutting its operations at five airports nationwide, saying it can no longer afford to support serving the destinations.
