Vietnam Wall Replica

ATHENS, Ga. — After an amazing and emotional motorcade from Winder to Athens, a scaled replica of the Vietnam Wall is here in town.

Yesterday, the wall arrived in Winder on an 18-wheeler. It was then led to Athens by a convoy that included hundreds of motorcyclists and Vietnam Veterans.

The replica will be on display at Evergreen Memorial Park, located at 3655 Atlanta Highway. An opening ceremony will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, and the memorial will be open until a closing ceremony at 5 p.m. Sunday.

“We’re expecting a large, large crowd,” Dan Greene, general manager of Evergreen Memorial, told me last week.

Yesterday, he added: “We’re honoring all veterans, not just Vietnam veterans. I think that’ll be evidenced by the people showing up.”

So, if you have a few minutes this weekend, stop by and visit the wall and say thanks to the thousands of soldiers who gave their lives defending this country, not just in Vietnam but in every war in our nation’s history.
