GRTA seeks public input on GA 400

The Georgia Regional Transportation Authority (GRTA) is sponsoring a series of public meetings to determine residents’ consensus on GA 400.

The meetings allow residents to ask questions of GRTA officials as well as learn what projects GRTA is currently undertaking or considering.

GRTA is currently working towards completing the Northern Sub-Area Study (NSAS). The study focused on projects related to helping the GA 400 corridor, defined as any land located three miles east and west of GA 400.

There are currently 65 projects approved by the Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC). These projects include sidewalk, bridge, intersection and transit improvements.

The project is examining “short-term goals. GRTA is not looking at long-term goals “because of the process; it takes longer to get that done.” Short-term projects are the ones that can “physically be accomplished and usable no later than December 2005.”

Public transportation options and the lack of east-west roads were the subjects of many residents’ questions at the meeting. Some projects directly address these concerns, such as strengthening shoulders along GA 400 to allow express buses to bypass traffic congestion.

While the northern arc, a road to connect the east and west regions of north metro Atlanta, was not addressed specifically by the GRTA, many residents were concerned about the viability of such a project.
