The Alpharetta Police Department wants additional funding to purchase equipment for the department’s traffic safety unit.
The money will be reallocated from the city’s Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) fund. On Monday, Oct. 15, the Alpharetta City Council unanimously approved the money.
The total expenditure for items requested by the department is $30,760.
Among the items are six laser detection devices, two units to measure speeding cars in neighborhoods and additional computer software to complement existing systems.
To slow down drivers within the city limits, there has been an increase in the number of citations issued. According to the department, many problems occur at busy intersections and residential neighborhoods.
One of the suggested items to purchase is a device that can be mounted on a utility pole and track cars’ movement through residential neighborhoods. With it, the department can research complaints without dispatching officers.
The data can then be downloaded to a computer and evaluated to determine where and when officers should be dispatched.
