Kelly and Somers to Rock Newport

Looking to get away from it all? Perhaps take a little road trip into Columbus.

Well, the Newport Music Hall has the perfect getaway in mind.

Live music.

Sean Kelly and Rob Somers of the Samples will be performing at 7 p.m. this Friday (Sept. 15) in the Newport Music Hall.

Singer and guitarist Sean Kelly has appeared playing multiple instruments on a myriad of albums, most notably a few National Lampoon’s albums and INXS’ 1984 effort, Swing.

Most recently, Kelly has worked with The Samples, performing guitar on several of the group’s albums.

In addition to his solo career, Kelly is a member of Hellion. The group has released a total of nine albums, much in the same vein as the music of the Samples.

Joining Kelly will be Rob Somers, currently of the Samples.

Somers has performed vocals and guitar on three Samples albums. The Samples are a unique blend of music, much like Sting meeting the Grateful Dead.

Their blend of jazz and pop has created a worldwide network of grassroots fans. The Samples first released an album in 1989 with their self-titled debut on Arista Records.

Since then, the Samples have released various independent albums, never digressing from their folk-based sound.

The Samples are one of many independent bands striving to make a living in a commercial music industry.

This concert will not be the first time that Kelly and Somers have performed together. The two have been performing at various venues throughout the United States.

Tickets for the event are $10.

The Newport Music Hall is located on High Street in downtown Columbus.
