‘Folkie’ Hunter to Perform on Campus

In a world of samples and synthesized beats, acoustic music brings with it a nice change of pace.

In this very spirit, Lisa Hunter will be performing at 10 p.m. on Thursday (Sept. 16) in The Bandersnatch.

A native of Ann Arbor, Mich., Hunter attended the University of Michigan and graduated with an Environmental Education degree. However, it was while working at the Rocky Mountain National Park that Hunter found her calling in life as a musician.

It was during this same time that Hunter began writing and recording songs.

As a result, in 1996, Hunter released her first album, Solid Ground. Though the album did not thrust her into the national spotlight, it did establish her sound as a new-age folk singer.

With one album under her belt, Hunter was ready to take to the road. Reaching such destinations as Austin, Texas and Seattle, Wash., Hunter was able to deliver her musical message to a broader audience.

The following year, Hunter gained some recognition for all of her hard work. She was nominated by the Detroit Music Awards as an Outstanding Individual/Duo for her album.

By 1998, Hunter was ready for a follow-up album. That year, she released Flying. While Hunter does occasionally use a backing band, she prefers to perform solo.

Her acoustic sound proves to be enough to draw in more and more listeners.

Recently, Hunter has been performing in small venues throughout Michigan. She also finds the time to perform for benefits as well.

Currently, Hunter has been recording live performances for an upcoming live album. On the whole, audiences have responded positively to Hunter’s sound.

As one fan said, “Lisa’s live show is something not to miss. She has a real ability to weave a story and share her engaging personality and sense of humor from the stage.”
