Music Prof to Take Center Stage

The sounds of Beethoven and Debussy can be heard throughout Denison’s lower campus next Wednesday (April 21). Instructor of Music Nelson Harper will take the stage at Burke Recital Hall to present a faculty recital.

The show begins at 8 p.m. and is free of charge to Denison students and the general public.

Harper, who has been at Denison since 1987, is an affiliated piano instructor in the music department.

On average, Harper performs several times a month in both solo and chamber settings.

Howard Ferguson is a British pianist who currently resides in London. His piece “Five Bagatelles” was composed as a part of a weekly concert series during World War II.

“Pathetique Sonata” is one of Beethoven’s more famous pieces. Composed in 1798, the sonata contains three movements.

Harper will be performing two pieces by Hungarian-born Franz Liszt, “Petrarch Sonnet No. 104” and “Hungarian Rhapsody, No. 104.”

Also being performed at the recital are five preludes of Claude Debussy Debussy a French composer is most famous for “Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune (Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun and Nocturnes).”

Harper is not interested in performing pieces that show off speed but rather those that are filled with color.

“This is all music I’ve been playing quite a lot in the last few years,” Harper said. “I like the wide variety of styles, colors and moods.”

The event is sponsored by the music department.
