Denison University improved to 4-1 for the first time since 1986 after it knocked off DePauw University, 42-21 at Deeds-Piper Stadium in Granville, Ohio.
Trailing Ohio Wesleyan University by seven, Denison University (3-1) engineered a huge fourth quarter comeback to force overtime and eventually upset the Battling Bishops 47-41 in double overtime before a crowd of 4,800 at Selby Stadium.
Berry College took a lead into halftime against Rhodes College thanks to a 47-yard touchdown run on a fake punt and a 100-yard fumble return for a touchdown. However, the visiting Vikings faltered in the second half, falling to the Lynx, 36-24, before a crowd of 2,198 at Crain Field.
In many ways, Berry College’s inaugural football season begins in earnest this week as the Vikings travel to Memphis, Tenn., to take on Rhodes College.
Mercer University relied on a strong running game and a stout defense during a rainy affair Saturday to defeat Berry College by a 43-0 margin to remain unbeaten.
Berry College will have the first road test of its inaugural football season when the Vikings head to Macon for a Saturday showdown with Mercer University, which looks to remain unbeaten.
When the college football season kicks off this week, fans in the Peach State will have three new teams to follow. Berry College in Rome, Mercer University in Macon and Reinhardt University in Waleska are all fielding teams this year.
