An Atlanta suburb is spending $125,000 to erect a monument to a local civil rights icon, the latest in an ongoing public discussion about who deserves a memorial and whether tax dollars should pay for such monuments.
The Georgia Department of Transportation said it doesn’t have enough personnel to maintain 24-hour Highway Emergency Response Operator patrols, a mainstay of metro Atlanta’s busy interstates.
Railfanning.org Publisher and Editor Todd DeFeo highlighted the history of the Atlanta Northern Railway during a presentation at the Smyrna Public Library.
At issue is a $6.5 million project to redevelop the town green, home to the local community center and library. City officials say it is the “biggest change to our downtown since the 1990s.”
