Centuries before Europeans came to Northwest Georgia, a number of Native American tribes inhabited the area. But, one particular tribe left its mark on the area by building ceremonial mounds that served as the centerpiece of their city.
On first glance, it might seem possible to dismiss Amelia Island as another beachfront town. But dig a little deeper and you’ll find plenty of history and culture.
The so-called Classic City is known for a lot, usually revolving around the University of Georgia. But, a major rail line passes through Athens, and there are a handful of historic depots worth checking out — all located within a 30 mile or so drive in any given direction.
Hallowed ground. The cathedral of baseball. Call it what you will; Yankee Stadium cannot be replaced. Sure, they’ll build a newer stadium across 161st Street and call it New Yankee Stadium, but it will not be the same.
