York City Walls

Overview

The York City Walls are a system of historic defensive walls surrounding much of central York, England.

Fortifications have protected the city in various forms since the Roman period, although relatively little of the surviving stonework is Roman. The route and construction of the defenses changed considerably during subsequent centuries.

Also known as the Bar Walls, the surviving fortifications are generally about 13 feet high and 6 feet wide. York has more miles of intact city wall than any other city in England, and the walls are considered the longest surviving town walls in the country.
