Overview
Saint Patrick’s Cathedral is a Church of Ireland cathedral in Dublin, Ireland. Since 1870, it has served as the national cathedral of the Church of Ireland. Unlike most cathedrals, Saint Patrick’s is not the seat of a bishop. The Archbishop of Dublin is based at Christ Church Cathedral, about 1,300 feet away.
The cathedral is headed by the dean of Saint Patrick’s, an office established in 1219. As the national cathedral, its chapter includes representatives from each of the Church of Ireland’s 12 dioceses. One of its best-known deans was writer and clergyman Jonathan Swift, author of Gulliver’s Travels.
