Overview
Marietta National Cemetery is a federal cemetery in Marietta, Georgia, established for Union soldiers who died during the Civil War. The 23-acre cemetery originated with Henry Greene Cole, a Marietta businessman and Unionist who offered land near downtown for the burial ground.
The federal government accepted the property, and plans initially called for both Union and Confederate dead to be buried there. However, local opposition led to Confederate soldiers being interred separately at the Marietta Confederate Cemetery.
Over the following years, Union soldiers buried throughout Georgia were disinterred and reburied at Marietta. Many original wooden grave markers had deteriorated by the time the transfers were completed in 1869, leaving thousands of soldiers unidentified.
The cemetery contains more than 17,000 people, including more than 3,000 unknown soldiers. Many of those interred there died during the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain.
