Leeman Statue

Overview

The George Leeman Statue, unveiled in 1885, stands outside York railway station in York, England. Created by local sculptor George Walker Milburn and funded through public subscription, the monument pays tribute to George Leeman, a lawyer, politician and prominent 19th-century railway executive.

In 1849, Leeman succeeded George Hudson as chairman of the York, Newcastle and Berwick Railway after investigations involving Leeman helped expose Hudson’s improper share dealings. Leeman subsequently helped promote the mergers that created the North Eastern Railway in 1854.

Leeman served as deputy chairman of the North Eastern Railway from 1855 to 1874 and chairman from 1874 until 1880. He remained a director until his death in 1882.
