Overview
The North Carolina legislature established Clarksville on Dec. 29, 1785, making Clarksville the second-oldest city in Middle Tennessee, behind Nashville. Until then, it was Davidson County, North Carolina.
The act appointed John Montgomery, Anthony Bledsoe, Anthony Crutcher, William Polk, and Lardner Clark as the town’s first commissioners. The principal inhabitants of Clarksville at the time were: John Montgomery, Anthony and William Crutcher, Amos Bird, George Bell, Robert Nelson, and Aenas McCallister.
