Metuchen will receive $500,000 in state taxpayer money to preserve and improve Memorial Park, Mayor Jonathan M. Busch announced in social media posts.
The funding, included in the newly approved and controversial state budget, comes during what state officials have described as a difficult budget year. Borough officials said the funding will help preserve the park’s historic character while ensuring it remains a place for remembrance and community gatherings.
According to Busch, borough officials identified Memorial Park as a funding priority, and local officials worked with the 18th Legislative District delegation to secure the money. The mayor credited Sen. Patrick Diegnan, D-Middlesex, and Assemblymen Rob Karabinchak, D-Middlesex and Sterley Stanley, both D-Middlesex, for backing the request at the state level.
I’m proud to share that Metuchen has secured $500,000 in the New Jersey State Budget for the preservation and enhancement of our historic Memorial Park, an unprecedented level of State investment in this treasured community asset.

The nearly one-acre Memorial Park has served as one of Metuchen’s central civic spaces since its creation in 1925 in honor of World War I. The park pays tribute to borough residents who died while serving in the U.S. military and hosts the community’s annual Memorial Day observance and POW/MIA recognition ceremonies.
The investment comes as communities across the country mark the nation’s 250th anniversary, with many municipalities using the milestone to restore historic landmarks and public spaces.
