GRANVILLE, Ohio — The former Worthington Inn owners bought the Buxton Inn in Granville, one of Ohio’s oldest continuously operated hotels, according to The Reporting Project at Denison University.
The publication, citing information from commercial real estate broker Brandon Hess of Shai Hess Commercial Real Estate in Newark, reported that Worthington-based New England Development Company is the new owner. The firm describes itself on its website as a family-owned real estate company with projects in the Buckeye State.
The Buxton complex was listed in 2024 for just under $4.7 million and later reduced to $2,795,000 for the inn and four adjacent houses, the Denison-aligned publication reported. Hess said the price cut drew multiple interested parties and that seller Robert Schilling and his partners were focused on finding someone to buy the property and operate as a hotel, with the sale ultimately closing after months of discussions.
Village Manager Herb Koehler told The Reporting Project that maintaining the Buxton complex intact and functioning as a hotel is a win for Granville, calling it a key attraction for the community.
The Buxton Inn, which dates to 1812, has been restored and expanded over time, including significant work under Schilling’s ownership since 2014. The property reopened after a 2022 kitchen fire and continued operating for lodging and events, though the restaurant has not resumed regular service, according to The Reporting Project.
