State Department issues worldwide security alert

WASHINGTON — The State Department issued a worldwide security alert on Sunday, urging Americans abroad to “exercise increased caution,” particularly in the Middle East, citing the potential for travel disruptions and the risk of attacks on U.S. interests.

In the alert, the department warned that periodic airspace closures could affect travel and said U.S. diplomatic facilities — including outside the Middle East — have been targeted. The notice also said groups supportive of Iran may target other U.S. interests overseas or locations associated with the United States and Americans worldwide.

The department advised Americans traveling or living abroad to follow guidance in security alerts issued by the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate, enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program at step.state.gov for updates, and monitor official channels, including TravelGov on X and the State Department’s WhatsApp security updates channel.

Travelers were also urged to review their destination’s travel advisory information and any recent alerts posted on travel.state.gov.
