METUCHEN, New Jersey — The Borough of Metuchen is kicking off an update to its master plan, launching a Master Plan Reexamination Report and a targeted “strategic update” to its Land Use Plan Element as it charts how the community should grow over the next decade.

A municipal master plan serves as the planning blueprint for development, spelling out goals, priorities and strategies that guide zoning and land-use decisions. Under New Jersey’s Municipal Land Use Law, towns are expected to reexamine or update their master plans at least every 10 years. Metuchen’s last reexamination report was adopted in July 2016.

Borough officials say the update is needed not only to reflect changes over the past decade but also to preserve the legal standing of the borough’s land development regulations, which can be strengthened when planning documents are kept current.

Metuchen first adopted a master plan in 1959. The last major overhaul was completed in 1983, and the 2016 reexamination recommended creating a community-driven “Vision Plan” to establish where Metuchen is, where it wants to go, and how to get there. Borough leaders now say it is time to deliver that vision plan, with public input at the center of the effort.

The borough held a community open house in November 2025 and is continuing outreach through online surveys. Those surveys are scheduled to close Sunday, May 3.

As part of the required reexamination, the borough will review the major land-development issues and objectives identified in 2016, evaluate how those have changed, and assess whether assumptions, policies or priorities underlying the master plan have shifted. The process also requires identifying specific recommended changes to the master plan or local regulations and considering how existing redevelopment plans should be incorporated.

The borough expects to adopt the updated master plan documents by the end of July 2026.
